Nostalgia kitchen

Welcome to this episode of Nostalgia Kitchen.
The year was 1961. Women were just creeping out from the "stay-at-home" mindset. A whole new world of cooking was arriving. The family demanded good meals but the woman demanded more free time. It was time......
BHG Casserole cook book
You remember this, don't you. I don't, because I wasn't born yet. Ah well, we will soldier on. I was perusing this lovely tome, looking for something to make. Little did I know that the perfect recipe was lurking inside. The perfect blend of flavor, ease of preparation and just plain fun. It also sounded funny too.
Wiener Bean Pot recipe
Do you see that? People are going to REJOICE over this recipe. How can I miss?
I decided to do this one in the style of the great cooking blogs *coughPioneerWomancough* and so I know it will be well received by all.
First the ingredients,
pork and beans, onion soup mix, catsup (ketchup?), water, brown sugar, mustard and frankfurters. Does anyone say frankfurters any more?

First you turn on the oven so it can be heating while you are stirring up this delectable concoction. Make sure you have adult help. That is, if you aren't an adult already. Or if you're drinking and cooking. You know how it is. 350 degrees, a moderate oven. No radical ovens here.

Dump your 2 cans of pork and beans or baked beans or whatever you bought. (disclaimer: I don't know the beautiful bean recipe for Bush's Baked Beans. The dog won't talk)

Now open the packet of onion soup mix carefully and just throw it in. Doesn't that look delish already?

1/3 cup catsup. I can't find my 1/3 cup measure so here's a little tip for you. Use the 1/2 cup measure and don't fill it up all the way. Live dangerously. That's my motto. My motto is also " It doesn't pay to be efficient" but that's another story.
ketchup weiner bean pot
Pour in the half cup of water. Note the beautiful glass two-cup measure. My pride and joy.

Two tablespoons of brown sugar. They look like sugar eyes. I'm sure there's a song to go with that.

One tablespoon of prepared mustard. Can't think of anything funny to say about that.
mustard weiner bean pot
And last but not least, the sliced frankfurters, hot dogs, weiners.

Stir it up and pop it uncovered into the oven. But first, discover that the oven racks are too high and waste time getting the hot pads out to move the oven rack. But no worries.

Next notify your son that dinner will be ready in one short hour.

And don't forget to turn on the timer because I'm terrible at remembering to take things out of the oven. Note the retro stove as well.

Then kick your feet back and find something else to do while you are waiting.
Eat a snack. 'Dessert First' is my motto. Or one of them.

No kitty, dinner is not done yet.

Do a little weaving with two kitty help. Hi Dusty and Fwuffie!

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Yay it's done!

And look! There is indeed rejoicing. Ah cooking is so satisfying!

And actually, it wasn't bad at all once I stopped giggling over the title.

Here's the recipe so you can try it yourself in your very own home.

Weiner Bean Pot
2 - 1 pound cans of pork and beans (4 cups)
1 envelope onion soup mix
1/3 cup catsup
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 pound frankfurters, sliced
Combine all ingredients in 2 quart casserole or bean pot. Bake uncovered in moderate oven (350 degrees) for one hour. Serves 6-8.

Easy to make, good tasting and very funny to say.
Well, that's all we have today from Nostalgia Kitchen.
Weiner Bean Pot to you too!

Snowy day

Snow tires might have been good.
